Soundarya Rajinikanth – Chandramukhi

Chandramukhi title card HD - YouTubeChandramukhi, which roughly translates to “moon-faced beauty”, is a Tamil movie directed by Vasudevan Peethambharan in 2005. It is about a woman named Ganga who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID). Her alter, or other personality is Chandramukhi who is a dancer hellbent on taking revenge on the king Vettaiyan. I chose this movie because it absolutely terrified me as a child, and I was too young to understand concepts such as a person having Dissociative Identity Disorder or “exorcising” ghosts.

Soundarya was responsible for creating the title sequence for this movie. As stated in her biography post, I believe that many of her projects were given to her because of nepotism; this one is no exception. The male lead in this film is none other than Rajinikanth, Soundarya’s father. At this point in time, Rajinikanth had already gained a lot of fame and earned the title “Super Star Rajini” (or Rajni depending on how they romanized his name). Before the movie plays, there is a series of flashing lights that spell out “SUPER STAR”. Then, the letters R-A-J-N-I dramatically flash on the screen. The whole ordeal is very over-the-top, which matches Rajinikanth’s personality; however, I do find it a little off-putting that Soundarya decided to create this to essentially brag about her father. The visuals in the title sequence mainly feature a temple door, which is the main setting of the movie. It is also where the characters discover Ganga’s alternate personality. The use of 3D models helps create the visual of a ghost story, but now it feels very out-dated.
