Who’s Who in Graphic Design: ON/OFF

ELLEN LUPTON & J. ABBOTT MILLER

J. Abbott Miller and wife Ellen Lupton often collaborate in their art and their designs. They are both graduates of the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City. They founded the studio, Design/Writing/Research tougher and pioneered the approach of design as a form of authorship. This approach can be seen throughout  their editorial and curatorial work. In 1996 the couple published a collection of essays on design theory and cultural history titled: Design/Writing/Research: Writing on Design.

ON/OFF

This was a collaborative project for Graphicstudio, on/off  is a set of two photogravures, it is an exploration into the use of light in order to create letter forms. The images were created using the light from a computer screen, the digital images were then transferred to film for use in photogravure, which is an etching process that creates great detail and tonal sensitivity.
