Bloomberg Billionares

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index visualizes the daily ranking of the world’s richest people. It dynamically measures billionaires’ wealth every business day at 5:30 p.m. EST based on several factors, like changes in markets, the economy, and Bloomberg News reporting. Lisa Strausfeld worked on this project at Bloomberg in 2013 with her team Hilla Katki, Christopher Cannon, Jeremy Diamond, Christian Swinehart, and Bloomberg reporting.

Bloomberg Visual Data created an interactive data website that visualizes the wealth and ranking of billionaires over time. It allows users to sort and filter by different topics and parameters, like source of wealth, age, gender, and citizenship. One of its most noticeable features is that it was built to alter and change depending on stock fluctuations and economic or company news. The visuals presented include graphs, charts, diagrams, and portfolio’s so that viewers could digest and interact with the information in whichever way they wish to.

At the time of its release, the Bloomberg Billionaire Index was a fearsome competitor to Forbes, a magazine known for publishing lists that detail various types of rich individuals. It could present information much faster and much more efficiently than the magazine could, as the 2012 Bloomberg Index beat Forbes to the list.

As of right now, the richest billionaire is Elon Musk, who stands at a total net worth of $273B.
