Katsui’s MYU Poster
The MYU or Miyagi University poster by Mitsuo Katsui was designed in 1977 for an operation called Kentaro Ota Miyagi University. It was later used for the 12th Tokyo International Trade Fair. Miyagi University is a small college that has a department for project design who collaborated with the Tokyo Trade Fair and Katsui in 1996. Katsui designed this poster twenty years prior to the event but is shown in a series of multiple other poster designs from 1996. There is not really any information on this design or any of his others, but it seems that he was commissioned in 1977 by MYU and used this poster again in 1996 when he worked with them again.
This poster is of an abstracted letter ‘M’ created with two humps that are symmetrical across the y axis that have vibrant yet pastel colors which bleed into each other. The background is a bright but not overpowering yellow. At the top center is the MYU letters placed vertically. This poster is a classic of Katsui with his fluorescent colors and abstracted composition. The design works because it is so simple but looks much more complex due to the layering of colors and clearly communicates the purpose of advertising MYU. Even though it was made twenty years before the event happened, it was a good choice to add to the series as the others have a similar style to this one.
