Smashbox

For the “Wild Design” assignment, I chose the Smashbox shadow, contour, and blush palette. This is a palette that I have and use, but have always hated the design. I feel that there is too much going on and it is distracting. For some products, packaging is everything and can influence whether or not it will sell. If I hadn’t have received this as a gift from a friend, it would not have piqued my interest enough for me to look into buying it. Although hard to tell from the picture, the entire design is lenticular, meaning that the picture changes depending on the angle it is viewed from. This is an interesting choice given that a makeup palette won’t do much moving. My palette is always sitting on my desk, so when I view it, it is slightly between images so it looks blurry (as seen in the picture). This is a headache to look at since it always seems out of focus. I understand the idea, but even if the lenticular element was still to be added, I would suggest for it not to be on the entire design. It’s an interesting concept, but not one that I think works with this product. Aside from that, the design is still a bit off to me. For one, the outside design doesn’t reflect the contents of what’s inside. The outside suggests a colorful and bright concept, while the inside is muted and neutral. Also if I were to make one change, it would be the placement/impact of the Smashbox name, as it is squeezed between lines of the design and in small thin font. It seems to have been an afterthought to the design itself. The entire design could work a lot better with a few changes and become less distracting and muddled.
