Rebeca Méndez Tsunami
This piece, commissioned by Tsunami Asian Grill Restaurant, is a 20,000 square foot long collage that spans the entirety of the grill, depicting a Japanese woman seeming to dissolve into the water. This piece interested me the most out of the others that I could’ve worked on, because of its sheer size, and how the images were expertly edited to flow into each other. Each image was personally taken by Rebeca Mendez, but the way that they were edited to look grainy, and how she let the images actually dissolve into each other is an aspect of her work that she seemed to have wanted to showcase. Her style of constantly intermingling different concepts is something that is consistent, and in this piece, the flowing, delicate intermingling of these sets of images to create a deep and connecting image with a sort of story showcases that motivation well. Similar to some of her other pieces that are meant to be inside buildings, this piece has a flowing and calming nature to it, showing her connection to the natural in all of her works. Also similar to some of her other interior wall wraps, this piece shows advancement in time and place. The images aren’t all taken in the same place, or even at the same time. It all shows movement and how there’s a consistency in inconsistency. I chose this piece to be part of her portfolio, because it is one of her earliest, in relation to the other two pieces I chose, and it shows two of her best practices in one piece, being naturalness and flow. These two show how keen she is on keeping her work, especially her personal work, natural. In an interview by her, she talks the most about her personal works, noting how she tries to keep her scenes as natural as possible, and I feel that this piece was included on the highlights of her website because it does just that. It’s one of those works that makes her personally proud and should be included in a portfolio celebrating her work.
