CRP Session 8: Wide Awake

I am certain that Katy Perry did not have this class in mind when she was creating, but I have reinterpreted the video for the purpose of sharing my growth over the semester.  Please view the video, then read the lyrics below.  I have added notes in italicized parentheses to clarify how I have applied them to my creative experience this semester.

Wide Awake – Katy Perry

I’m wide awake[x3]

Yeah, I was in the dark  (about digital storytelling)
I was falling hard
With an open heart (for the idea that I could easily grasp the basis of the class)
I’m wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong?  (As time passed, I saw that I was much less aware than I believed)

8519036735_fd398c210f_cI’m wide awake and now it’s clear to me
That everything you see, ain’t always what it seems  (perception of self and the class)
I’m wide awake
Yeah, I was dreaming for so long

I wish I knew then
What I know now (about creativity in digital storytelling)
Wouldn’t dive in
Wouldn’t bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet  (Dr. Crissman made the transition for my naivete much less harsh than it could have been)
Till I woke up on
On, on the concrete (realization that I had more to learn)

Falling from cloud nine
Crashing from the high
I’m letting go tonight
Yeah, I’m falling from cloud nine

I’m wide awake
Not losing any sleep
I Picked up every piece and landed on my feet  (I have succeeded at being creative in my storytelling)
I’m wide awake
Need nothing to complete myself, no (I am creative!)

I’m wide awake
Yeah, I am born again (I have a new perspective about my own creativity)
Outta the lion’s den (a dark place filled with looming ideas)
I don’t have to pretend and it’s too late
The story’s over now, the end  (the semester is complete)   open book with "The End" on the right page

Thunder rumbling
Castles crumbling (old thoughts are gone)
(I’m wide awake)
I am trying to hold on
(I’m wide awake)
God knows that I tried
Seeing the bright side (during my confusion about certain aspects)
(I’m wide awake)
But I’m not blind anymore (I know now that I just made some things a little harder than I had to in the spirit of my own perfectionism)
I’m wide awake[x2]

I’m Wide awake[x4]  (I have a new understanding of what it takes to create digital stories and am confident that I could proceed with the knowledge I have gained.  I also feel clear enough about digital storytelling to create without Dr. Crissman’s feedback, though it is always appreciated. Please note: the guy Katy Perry knocks out at the end represents my older ways of thinking, not Dr. Crissman!!! )
