Babies and Badges

There are places where the snow doesn’t melt right away! I had almost forgotten!

So I am totally distracted by my best friend’s 2 month old baby right now.  His name is Caleb and he has a full head of bright red hair- he is super adorable and I’m already in love!  I came up to meet him for my spring break (woooo- college! PS- I haven’t had a spring break in a loooong time so this is very exciting for me) even though he lives in Michigan and there is lots (compared to NC) of snow on the ground.

So far my favorite things about Little Red Man:

  • he makes squeaking noises when he bottle feeds
  • he’s 2 months old and already needs a haircut
  • he just fell asleep with the hiccups and it was adorable

OK-so for the last bit of school work I plan on doing for the next few days………………………………………………………………

To start my critical reflection I am turning to the badges I was awarded from my radio show colleagues.  At the beginning of the project we chose 6 badges that we then nominated our other 2 project collaborators for at the end.  If there was agreement on the badge from 2 our of 3 people then you “won” it…at least I’m pretty sure that’s how it worked. I was awarded the PLAY badge for using Survey Monkey and sharing all my ideas.

I also received ACTION-ORIENTED since I created and sent out the survey literally moments after we agreed upon the food truck idea and that I was first to finish my segment and give it to our editor.

I’m actually pretty pleased with these.  Working as someone who organized a summer camp for several years- I think those are two aspects of myself that are what helped me do my job.  You have to be both playful and action-oriented in the informal science ed careers!

The other badges were EDGY, FOCUS, ORGANIZATION and PROBLEM FINDING.  I feel I would often win things like “organization” but Prep Nice was already on top of it and I was fine with someone else having the reins this time.  I hope I was still helpful to her in that I was aiding and not hindering any organization she may have been trying to implement. I think the person who was the ultimate editor, which Prep Nice was, probably had the toughest job as they had to try to make individual pieces fit together.  I think I may have felt more pressure to stay on top of all the details if I was in charge of finalizing the project like that. She nailed it and I am glad she volunteered for that position and won that badge.

I think depending on the group, I can also sometime be the focus person…but really that one depends on dynamics.  I’m also the person to briefly distract focus in times of tension sometimes.  I think ‘edgy’ is something I need to strive for more and getting out there and asking the tough questions like Joanne.  When I did my interviews I took a secret weapon- a cute 3 month old puppy dressed in NC State colors.  This helped break the ice with people so I could then ask them for their feedback.  After that I harassed my friends and family into calling my voice mail and leaving sound bytes :).

Overall, working with other colleagues did make me want to be that action-oriented person.  I wanted to make sure I had my segment done quickly, and done to a point that I was still pleased with the outcome. I wanted to (A) make sure Preference had it in plenty of time to do her thing with and (B) make sure it was something that Preference and Joanne would be proud to add to their own segments.  I know all three of us were swamped with school and personal obligations so I’m proud with the product we were able to turn out in such a short period of time.  I also enjoyed seeing the different perspectives and opinions throughout the whole creative process. Not having met anyone in class before or ever seeing them outside of class, I also very much enjoyed just having a chance to talk to these ladies outside of class time.  I also learned a lot more about “layering” with the audio by adding the sounds and interviews on top of my own speech. Hopefully this will help see the layers I need to see in the photo editing project.
